Butternut / White Walnut - Wood Turning
Welcome welcome! In this video I will be taking a piece of what I believe to be Butternut, a.k.a. white walnut to make a small curvy bowl on the woodturning lathe.
Im not entirely sure what the species of wood but but it looks and feels a lot like previous pieces of butternut I've turned in the past. If you think another wood better fits the bill then let me know!
Sealed with Chestnut Products cellulose sanding sealer and polished with TrueGrit abrasive paste to finish.

Colourful Maple Burl Vase - Woodturning
Переглядів 602Місяць тому
Welcome welcome, this video sees the return of a twig pot I turned from maple burl a little over 3 years ago. Ever since it has been sat on the shelf telling me to reshape and hollow so, this is what happened. I also added some colour with the Chestnut Products spirit stains, red, purple and yellow and finally finished with a little Walrus oil. As always, thanks for watching! Please feel free t...
Wood Turning and Pyrography - Oak Hollow Form
Переглядів 1 тис.2 місяці тому
Welcome welcome! In this video I use a woodturning lathe to make a small hollow form with white oak followed by a little pyrography adding detail to the existing grain lines of the timber. Firstly mounted on a drive spur to form the tenon before being flipped over for the rest of the process. Shaped using a 3/8ths bowl gouge for the most part. The centre was removed with a 14mm Forstner bit and...
An Impossible Bowl - Multi Axis Wood Turning
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
Welcome welcome! In this video I will be making an impossible emerging bowl in a board. The timber is Basswood (Linden/Lime) and it was shaped using multi axis wood turning techniques and the lathe. Mounted either by worm screw or tenon this piece was turned on two separate axis using my bowl gouge, beading tool and parting tool and due to the shape, speed and general pointiness of the board wh...
Multi Axis Wood Turning In Almost Every Direction

Welcome welcome! In this video I make twig pot twins using a lathe and multi axis wood turning methods. A piece of black walnut was mounted onto a waste block then shaped before being cut in half, rotated 90 degrees, shaped some more. The blanks were then mounted individually in the spindle orientation to remove waste wood and shape the top of the vases. Finally a sand and a coat of shellac to ...
Multi Axis Wood Turning - The Emerging Ball
Переглядів 25 тис.4 місяці тому
Hello folks! In this video I will be experimenting to make an emerging ball piece. This is something I have wanted to try for a while but never gotten round to it. Starting with a blank approximately 20mm square by about 150mm long, mounted off centre to create the first hemisphere. The blank was then rotated by 90 degrees along its length to create the second hemisphere matching up with the si...

Oh hi, long time no see! Apologies for my absence over these last few months but winter sucks and it's really kicked my ass this year.. that said, it is getting warmer/lighter and I have actually been back into the workshop to make a thing! And what better way to start back with than with a bowl from one of my absolute favourite woods, olive. Yes please! Relatively smooth sailing until half of ...

    What does one need to do to prepare to turn harder woods? Just frequent sharpening of the tools? I was here assuming you would use carbides (i'm a noob).

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning 7 днів тому

      That's what it comes down to really, the harder woods dull your tools quicker so you're forever back and to to the bench grinder. It's a lot of light cuts too, can't hoof out big chunks like you can with birch for example. The tools will get HOT too 😂 Well worth the effort. I still do use carbide for certain things but the vast majority of the time it's a 3/8ths bowl gouge. No right or wrong, whatever works 😁

    Nice piece. What tool did you use to add the burn line decorations to the base? (only familiar with doing this with wire)

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning 20 днів тому

      Thank you so much! I burnt the lines with a thin off-cut of wood. Normally i'll use an ice cream stick but I didn't have any to hand that day. That's actually a great reason to put ice cream on my shopping list! Wire is perfect for external detail.

      Thank you so much!! This was a bit of a custom, I had my logo cut into aluminium using a CNC then shaped the 'spoon' afterwards. It's a lot less faff when marking just one or two at a time. What I will say is the aluminium is a little soft and heats up quickly, go with brass or stainless, my next will definitely be from one of those. Thanks for watching!!

    When you produced the hollowing hook I thought you were joking! Talk about keyhole surgery; you're fearless mate! The colours aren't quite my cuppa' tea but it's a very interesting result. Cheers Tim and thanks, you're always an inspiration.

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning Місяць тому

      Thanks Mark! I do like hollowing out pieces of wood but it isn't much of a spectator sport, it's not that visually interesting in person as the vast majority is done by feel. Out of interest, if you could choose, what would be your colour preference? I'll be honest, I do like the look of raw wood but a little splash of colour is nice from time to time. Cheers mate, take care!
